As you type in your preferred writing medium, Grammarly is there to pick up the slack and note where you’ve made a mistake or could stand to improve your grammar. I use this for every single document, social post and email. And it’s free!


2. Hemingway Editor

Not every article you write will need to be extremely concise or written at a 4th-grade level [did you know that for marketing you should be writing at a 4th grade level 75% of the time?]. When you need to, though, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better platform to help you fine-tune (see: abbreviate and dumb down) your writing than this content marketing tool.

3. CoSchedule Headline Analyzer

Given most people won’t click on un-engaging headlines, making the titles of your content as scannable and interesting as possible is a must. This tool from social media management tool CoSchedule can help ensure your blog posts catch readers’ attention and get them to read.

“Analyze what content performs best for any topic or competitor”: That’s the tagline for this content marketing tool which is used by everyone from the biggest brands out there today to SMB marketers. The paid version of this will take you into a deep dark rabbit hole of content goodness - be for-warned!


10. ahrefs

If you’re looking for a comprehensive keyword/SEO tool that can help you elevate your search ranking over time, ahrefs is an ideal platform to use. The UI is a bit complex if you’re a novice marketer, but it offers a wealth of data for those looking for a better content performance.

Social Media Tools

11. Buffer

Scheduling your content across all of your (or your company’s or client’s) social media channels is a cinch with Buffer. Simply connect those accounts to the platform, and the solution makes it simple to automate social shares for the days, weeks, and months ahead. This is what we use.


12. Hootsuite

Hootsuite essentially has the same offerings as the former, with the only major difference being the user interface. Try out both tools (which both offer free and paid plans) to see which you feel more comfortable using. Both are fairly intuitive to use, so you can’t go wrong.


13. Edgar

Edgar differs slightly from the two aforementioned social media tools in that it allows you to create a library of content from which you can categorize and schedule over the long run through weekly and monthly schedules.


14. Biteable

Want to create engaging videos you can use to promote your written content and other marketing collateral on social? Developing text-heavy videos with stock imagery in the background is a piece of cake with this unique platform.

15. Mention

Tracking all of your social media activity can be troublesome, especially if you use multiple platforms to post content on Facebook, Twitter, and the like. With Mention, you can analyze your social performance and those of competitors, influencers, and related industry brands.

16. Unsplash

You’ll have no trouble finding stock photo sites that offer free/royalty-free images, but Unsplash is clearly the cream of the crop. Even the most vague of search terms can bring up numerous stock photo options to use in your content.

Even if you don’t have a design bone in your body, chances are you could figure out how to craft an amazing-looking social media banner image, infographic, or oher design in Canva (and in just a matter of minutes). Consider this the ultimate beginner’s design tool.
